KidX — Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions families ask before joining a KidX preschool week in Japan.
About KidX
What is KidX?
KidX is a family travel experience that places young children into a real Japanese preschool for a week while the whole family stays nearby. Families with children aged 3 to 6 travel to Japan, the child attends a local kindergarten or forest preschool for five days alongside Japanese children, and the parents have the week to themselves to explore, rest, or reconnect. KidX is run by Glyn and Ange, a couple based in Singapore who built the experience for their own children first.
Who runs KidX, and are they qualified to work with young children?
KidX was founded by Glyn and Ange. Ange is a psychologist who specialises in childhood development, which directly shapes how KidX selects preschools and supports children through the experience. Glyn is a management consultant with a background in technology across Asia, is a fluent Japanese speaker of Australian origin, and raises his own two children bilingually in Japanese. Every KidX location partnership was built personally, in Japanese, through real relationships rather than online booking platforms. The couple has been travelling with their own children since infancy, and the experience they sell is the one they created for their own family.
Who is KidX for?
KidX is designed for families with children aged 3 to 6, particularly Singapore-based and expat families, who want their child to experience unstructured nature, a new language, and a different culture. It suits parents who value experience over instruction and who want their children to have a kind of childhood that a dense major city cannot easily provide. It also suits parents who want time to reconnect with each other or to combine the trip with remote work, since all accommodation has internet and a workspace.
Who is KidX NOT for?
KidX is not a guided tour and not a travel agency. Families who want airport transfers, fixed itineraries, and someone managing every detail of their holiday will find it isn’t the right fit. It is best suited to independent-minded families who are comfortable driving themselves and want an authentic local experience rather than a packaged tour.
Pricing & what’s included
How much does a KidX trip cost?
KidX pricing starts from SGD 2,988 for one child and two adults. Final pricing is bespoke and depends on the location, the dates, and the specific accommodation chosen, so the exact cost is confirmed for each family. All pricing is in Singapore dollars.
What does the price include?
A standard KidX package includes six nights of accommodation, five days of preschool for the child, a curated Google Map of personal local recommendations, and access to “The Group Chat” — a dedicated WhatsApp group with the family, the on-site coordinator, and both founders throughout the trip. Car rental can be arranged as part of the package as a convenience.
What is NOT included in the price?
KidX does not include international flights, food and groceries, or travel insurance. Depending on the location, preschool lunch may or may not be included, and this is confirmed for each family before booking. KidX is not a travel agency and does not provide airport transfer services.
Does the price change for a larger family?
Yes. The starting price covers one child and two adults. Because pricing is bespoke and depends on location, dates, and accommodation, families with more children or additional adults receive a tailored quote. Several locations offer accommodation that sleeps larger groups.
Your child’s experience
Does my child need to speak Japanese?
No. Children do not need to speak any Japanese to attend the preschool. Young children are used to not understanding everything around them, and play is a shared language that works regardless of words. In most cases the teachers speak some English, but in KidX’s experience the language gap is not a problem for the children themselves. It is usually the adults who turn it into a problem by over-worrying — the children adapt quickly.
What if my child has never been to preschool before?
Children without prior preschool experience are accepted at KidX locations. That said, a child who has never been in any preschool setting may find the first days more challenging, simply because everything is new at once. KidX recommends the full week precisely for this reason: it takes a child some time to settle in, and a full week gives them the space to move past the initial adjustment and start to enjoy it.
How are children supervised during the preschool day?
Children are supervised by the preschool’s own teaching staff during program hours, the same as the local Japanese children who attend. Supervision ratios vary by school. On top of the school’s own staff, KidX provides an on-site coordinator for each location who knows the school, has a relationship with the staff, and is reachable through The Group Chat if anything comes up during the day.
How are allergies, dietary needs, and medical conditions handled?
KidX asks about allergies, dietary requirements, and relevant medical conditions in advance, before the trip, so the right information can be shared with the preschool and accommodation ahead of arrival.
Logistics & getting around
Do parents drive themselves in Japan?
Yes. Depending on the location, parents either drive or walk to the preschool to drop off and collect their child. Car rental can be arranged by KidX as a convenience, but families drive themselves — KidX is not a chauffeur or transfer service.
What do parents do while the child is at preschool?
The preschool day gives parents their time back. During preschool hours, parents are free to explore the local area, rest, reconnect as a couple, or work remotely if they choose. This is one of the things families value most about the experience.
Are airport transfers included?
No. KidX does not provide airport transfer services and is not a travel agency. Families arrange their own transport to and from the airport. KidX can book car rental on a family’s behalf purely as a convenience.
Can my family choose our own dates?
Yes. Families can pick their own week. KidX generally recommends a full week at the preschool rather than a shorter stay, because it takes a child time to get used to the new environment and a full week lets them settle in and enjoy it.
Booking, timing & policies
How far in advance should I book?
Families should book as far in advance as they can, and KidX recommends booking at least two months ahead. Booking early gives the best choice of dates, locations, and accommodation.
Is there a best time of year to visit?
Every season in Japan has its own festivals, activities, and seasonal experiences, so there is no single best time — each season offers children something different and unique. The right time depends on what kind of experience a family wants.
What is the date-change policy?
Date changes are handled on a best-efforts basis and require at least one month’s notice.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Cancellations require at least one month’s notice. An administration fee of SGD 500 applies to cancellations.
Do we need a visa to visit Japan?
Travellers from Singapore, Australia, and Taiwan do not need a visa for this kind of short-stay visit to Japan. Families should always confirm current entry requirements for their own nationality before travelling.
What makes KidX different
Why choose KidX instead of arranging a Japanese preschool stay myself?
KidX exists because the founders did exactly that — they arranged a preschool-exchange experience for their own family through an existing operator. The underlying experience was extraordinary, but the operator added almost no value: there was no on-site coordinator, the onboarding meant filling in and uploading spreadsheets, the schedule was rigid with every program locked to a fixed start and end day, and the price was significantly higher. KidX was built to deliver the same extraordinary experience done properly — with a real coordinator on the ground at each location, flexible dates, a simpler process, and fairer pricing.
What is “The Group Chat”?
The Group Chat is a dedicated WhatsApp group set up for every family, containing the family, the on-site coordinator for their location, and both founders. It runs throughout the trip and means a family is never left to figure things out alone — questions, logistics, and anything that comes up during the week can be handled in real time by people who know the place and the school. It is the single biggest difference between KidX and a self-arranged or competitor experience.
Why is a Japanese preschool week valuable for a child from a city like Singapore?
Children growing up in a dense major city often have limited access to unstructured time in nature. At a KidX forest or village preschool, children climb trees, play in rivers, plant and harvest food, and spend their days outdoors alongside local children. For many KidX families, the trip is the first time their child has done these things. KidX frames this as giving a child a dose of childhood that a major metropolis cannot easily provide — chosen deliberately by a founder whose own background is in childhood development.
